Restorative Dentistry

Examination, diagnosis and case planning will be emphasized so that accurate decisions may be made directing patient care to specific specialty care. Operative clinical skills and techniques include the use of various restorative materials including metal-free crowns, porcelain veneers and vital bleaching.

Endodontics

The teaching program will include diagnosis and treatment planning, armamentarium and arrangement of equipment, management of endodontic emergencies, non-surgical root canal therapy, and adjunctive surgical endodontic procedures. Rotary endodontics is taught using the Tulsa system. Digital radiography and a surgical microscope enhance diagnosis and treatment.

Implants

Lehigh Valley Hospital has a comprehensive implant program that includes seminars, full day lectures, and individual case presentations. The Resident will have the opportunity to place and restore several implants during their residency program.

Oral Surgery

The dental resident will assist at major oral trauma surgery procedures in the operating room and will admit, treat and discharge hospital inpatients according to the policies set by the American Dental Association (ADA) and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAHO). Special oral surgery procedures will be performed in the dental facility including surgical extractions, uncomplicated third molar impactions, alveoloplasties, tori removal and biopsies as well as implant placements with or without bone grafts.

Orthodontics

The resident, with guidance from staff orthodontists, will have the opportunity to place space maintainers, correct minor crossbites and place removable appliances and other orthodontic appliances to correct minor malocclusions.

Pediatric Dentistry

The resident will learn techniques involving treatment of pediatric patients, including proper diagnosis and planning, and the management of behavior problems. Emphasis is also placed on the treatment of handicapped children. Patients are treated in the dental clinic as well as under general anesthesia in the operating room.

Periodontics

The resident will receive training and experience in oral examination, diagnosis and treatment planning, clinical treatment of periodontal disease and its management including oral manifestations of systemic disease, the interpretation of oral radiographs, oral pathology and periodontal histopathology. Treatment includes scaling and root planing and periodontal surgeries including flaps, crown-lengthening procedures, and implant placement with or without bone grafts.

Prosthetics

After a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan, the resident will participate in the construction of practical cases including full dentures, partial dentures, crowns and bridges. Emphasis will be placed on various techniques
and designs of the prostheses and properly setting up the case in preparation for the laboratory procedures.

Special Care

The resident will have an opportunity to become involved with the growing demand of senior citizens and medically compromised patients for dental care. Mentally and physically handicapped patients will be treated with guidance from experienced staff members. Cases can be completed in the clinic or operating room using various management techniques, including oral pre-medication, IV sedation or general anesthesia.

Anesthesia Rotation

the resident will take a three-week course of instruction in anesthesia and will be exposed to most types of anesthesia and resuscitative techniques under the direct supervision of the Department of Anesthesia.

Emergency Medicine Rotation

This rotation will familiarize the resident with hospital protocol in treating emergency patients. He or she will assist the attending physician in all aspects of emergency care, with particular attention to oral trauma and infection. The resident will learn to suture both intra-oral and extra-oral tissues.

Family Practice Rotation

The resident will become familiar with the care and management of patients with various systemic diseases and will perform complete history and physical examinations with emphasis on the head and neck areas.
